Thoughts on collage..


 


The concept of the DOUBLE MEANING is essential for the collage; as the Group Mu Manifesto states: “Each cited element breaks the continuity or the linearity of the discourse and leads necessarily to a double reading: that of the fragment perceived in relation to its text of origin; that of the same fragment as incorporated into a new whole, a different totality. The trick of collage consists also of never entirely suppressing the alterity of these elements reunited in a temporary composition” Revue d'esthetique,1978.

 

 For Henri Matisse, cut out was not an renunciation of painting and sculpture: he called it “painting with scissors.” Matisse said, "Only what I created after the illness constitutes my real self: free, liberated.” Moreover, experimentation with cut-outs offered Matisse innumerable opportunities to fashion a new, aesthetically pleasing environment....


I really wanted to explore on the issue of the spontaneous as well as bringing on a roughness quality of the collage technique. These works were done as a quick exercise with the emphasis of showing the rawness/untidiness. To me this exercise was a side work while my exploratory work was moving on, a sort of rough sketches preluding the final ...
